Author Biography: Fitzroy Maclean was a Scottish diplomat, soldier, adventurer, politician and writer. During World War II he was posted to Yugoslavia as Churchill's personal representative and Commander of the Mission with Tito's partisans. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre (France), Order of Kutuzov (Russia) and Partisan Star (Yugoslavia). In 1993 he was created a Knight of the Thistle, Scotland's highest chivalric order. Eastern Approaches, the account of his experiences in Russia and Central Asia before the war, has sold more than a million copies in seven languages. His other books include a History of Scotland and a biography of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Harper Lee tops librarians' must-read list

It was published over 40 years ago and its American author has lived as a virtual recluse ever since, but according to Britain's librarians, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mocking Bird is the book that everyone should read.
The Pulitzer prize-winning classic has topped a World Book Day poll conducted by the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), in which librarians around the country were asked the question, "Which book should every adult read before they die?" The book, which has been a staple of schoolroom reading lists for many years, also came second in another poll released today on our favourite happy endings. It explores issues of race and class in 1930s deep south America, through the dramatic court case of a black man charged with the rape of white girl.
According to Diana Ashcroft, one of the librarians who voted for the book, it "has all the factors of a great read. It is touching and funny but has a serious message about prejudice, fighting for justice and coming of age."
Harper Lee is also likely to receive a renewed flush of publicity with the opening this week of the Hollywood film Capote, in which she is a key character.
To Kill a Mocking Bird heads an odd triumvirate at the top of the librarians' list: it is followed by the Bible and, in third place, the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Further down the rankings, a mixture of classics and popular contemporary titles feature. Dickens and Austen both appear in the top 10, along with Philip Pullman's His Dark Material trilogy and Sebastian Faulks' first world war novel, Birdsong. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger - both favourites of Richard and Judy's Book Club - also find a place in the top 30, alongside more established classics such as A Clockwork Orange and the Lord of the Flies. Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code received just one nomination.
Mark Wood, chairman of the MLA, commented, "This goes to show that if you are stuck for something to read, you should ask a librarian."

This is a history - not a modern how-to-do-it book. A wonderful, extraordinarily comprehensive, work on the the early naturalists, the game fish species, and the early writers on saltwater gamefishing and their books. Lavishly illustrated from old paintings and early photographs. Includes a whole chapter on early salt water game fishing books.

Saltwater Game Fishes of The World, An Illustrated History, by Bob Dunn and Peter Goadby, is a most impressive work of scholarship. It is a big, coffee-table size work that is wonderfully and copiously illustrated. Saltwater Game Fishes is divided into three parts: The Naturalists, The Fishes, and The Anglers.

The Naturalists, starting with Aristotle, looks at the history of the study of fish through to the 19th century. This section covers the first nine chapters of the book. The Fishes covers the broadbill swordfish, sailfish and marlin, tuna and mackerel, sharks, dolphin, bluefish, striped bass, tarpon, bonefish and cobia - which is new to me. Zane Grey is quoted as stating in 1936 that the bonefish was the most challenging of the fish that he had caught. And this from a man who spent the best part of a life-time chasing giant marlin, bluefin tuna and every game fish that swims.

The final chapters cover the origins of sea fishing as a sport, the pioneers of ocean gamefishing, the tackle used, early writings on saltwater fishing and saltwater gamefishing classics and a final chapter on the sport coming of age.
The book ends with an extensive but selected bibliography, illustration credits and a comprehensive index.

I am sure that one of the attractions of researching and writing this book must have been the characters involved, the tackle they used and the wonderful illustrations - mosaics, paintings and photographs.

Bob Dunn has been an angler for over 30 years and has enjoyed many facets of saltwater fishing including saltwater fly fishing. He has written two books on the history of Australian angling and when not fishing or writing about it, operates under the name Antiquarian Angler as a specialist dealer in old fishing books, prints, antique tackle and memorabilia.

His fellow author, Peter Goadby, is a leading big game angler and author and is described on the dust jacket as a 'living legend'. He has fished many of the world's best hot spots and his knowledge and counsel on big game fish is sought by anglers and scientists alike.

As Michael Leech, president of the International Game Fish Association, writes in his foreword 'This book is not just a book for saltwater anglers. All anglers, whatever their individual persuasion, will benefit from this erudite and highly readable investigation of the origins of their sport.' Angling has a wonderful literary heritage and this book will enhance that heritage.
