Pakula Dojo Shackle Hook Rig 40mm DSR40

  • Hooks: Size 40 Dojo Hooks
  • Gap Length: 40mm
  • Lures: Sprocket, Rat

The Pakula Full 60 Degree Shackle Rig was originally invented by Peter Pakula when trolling lures for Blue Marlin was still in its infancy on Australia's East Coast. It was a time when many lures of all types including Pakula Prototypes were tried daily. This necessitated a rig that could easily and quickly be transferred between lures and also allowed the lure maximum freedom of action. As strikes were not common it was imperative that the lures rig also offered the best possible hook up rates. This rig satisfied all these requirements to a point that there has only been minor changes in the current rigs. You only need a few sets of hooks which can be used on many lures. It is relatively easy to keep a few sets of hooks razor sharp and clean on a cull collection of lures.

The Pakula Shackle Rig allows the hooks total freedom to line up with the lures centre eliminating line twist. The hooks are free to swing allowing the lure to exhibit it's best possible action without hindrance or keeling effects. This gives the hooks the best possible chance of hooking up as they are able to work independently of each other. We recommend the hooks are set to 60 degrees. In this configuration both hooks travel with their points up and in a slight "V" formation acting as a rudder.

Hooks used in this rig are custom Pakula Dojo Peche Hooks. They are double ground pre-sharpened using high strength 402J2 stainless steel!

Tips:

  • The thinner the leader the better the action of the lure and with all fishing, the lighter the leader the more fish will be fooled.
  • When Crimping nylon ensure you leave the ends of the crimp flared so the edges don't cut into the leader.
  • Use a thimble or tubing to form a loop to all the shackle to swing freely without abrading or fatiguing the leader.
  • The shackle allows the hooks to swing and align allowing the lure to perform to its maximum ability.
  • By using a loose collar the hooks are are free to swing and move with the lures action without retarding it. The collar also restricts the wire crossing over the hook and fouling.
  • The Top hook and trailing hook should be the same size to balance the rig.
  • Stainless wire lies straight and protects the rig against "toothy critters".
  • The trailing hook can flex without the hook locking on the wire loop.
  • The trailing hook and wire should be set at 60 degrees to the forward hook forming a " V" by twisting the hooks. The positioning of the hooks in the lure determines which way up the lure will run as the hooks at this angle will both travel point up when trolled. Usually the hooks are positioned in the dark side of the skirts.
